Barnes and Noble nook to get an update this week? Sure sounds like it - Engadget

This will hopefully not follow the course of all of Barnes and Noble's promises. Engadget says the nook update will be pushed out most likely around Tuesday. According to a tipster, the update will contain these fixes (and probably more):

  • Page turning and formatting of downloaded e-books has been improved.
  • Start-up time for My Library, The Daily, and Setting has been improved.
  • Barnes & Noble in-store content and promotions roll-out is fully supported.
  • Launches reader immediately on Select from The Daily and My Library for books and subscriptions that have already been downloaded.
  • Reading Now takes customer straight into the last book page read without reformatting the content.
  • Displays the correct time on the status bar.
  • No longer unprompted to the home screen when pressing the arrow or the select button.
  • Displays correct error-message for pre-ordering books that are not yet available.

A nook firmware update coming this weekend?

According to the nookDevs wiki, a firmware update for the nook is likely to arrive this weekend. This was told to a nook user by B&N tech support. Hopefully it's more than just bug fixes and includes some more features as well. My nook has had its own share of slightly annoying bugs, so this would be greatly awaited.

My review of the nook

I received my nook yesterday! To review it, I've considered some aspects of the device and have given them a letter grade from A+ to F.

So here goes:

  • Packaging - C+ - Packaging was confusing. Trying to find the right way to pull off the plastic, even with the guide that comes with it, was a big hassle. Other than that, once that is over, everything is a lot better.
  • Functionality - A+ - The nook has PDF support, EPUB support, Fictionwise support, plays MP3s in a dedicated player on the bottom color screen, has OverDrive library support for renting books through Adobe Digital Editions, AT&T 3G and WiFi, microSD support, and LendMe. Lots of features for an eReader device.
  • Realistically flawless operation (no bugs) - B - most of the time the nook acts fine as it is supposed to, however there are occasional "can not connect" errors as well as minor interface glitches, such as Android-style "Force Quit" windows. One time the bottom screen somehow appeared on the top for a small while. Also, device error messages should be more clear as to their cause. One of the errors was caused by an account default credit card payment setting that wasn't set. Lagginess is not really a problem. It is either really exaggerated or a software update happened that really fixed it. As for the "Formatting" message on the screen when opening the book, it's really not a problem; it goes away pretty quick and actually makes the eBook look a lot better.
  • Battery life - A- - I can't really say a lot about this as I've only had it for a short while. But I can say that it depends on how much you use it and on your nook's settings.

I seriously think that Barnes and Noble has a lot of potential with this eBook device. Updates done to it through the 3G or WiFi connection should fix a lot of its bugs and help it make the Kindle run and hide. If Barnes and Noble keeps on supporting it with updates and other support, the nook can potentially become the best eReader there is. nook's home screen

Lots of updates along the way!

Reading from the nook User Guide (available here), I've noticed an interesting paragraph concerning updates:

What this probably means is that the nook will have lots of updates, including some that might be major software refinements and additions. Also this makes the idea of a nook App Store more likely feasible as users could download apps through Wi-Fi. Hopefully by January when most people will have their nooks, Barnes and Noble will iron out most problems in the nook software.
